Germany might not have played like the European champions but an Andreas Moeller goal was enough to edge Olympic titlist Nigeria 1-0 on a night that saw two-thirds of the World Cup field in warmup action. Two of Germany's first-round opponents, Yugoslavia and the United States, both turned in impressive wins over fellow qualifiers, as did 1994 runner-up Italy.
Sampras revives old memories against Agassi
It was just the second round of the Monte Carlo Open but it still had some influence on the No 1 spot. Sampras received a big boost towards regaining No 1 after topping Agassi 6-4, 7-5 yesterday. Sampras was down 2-0 in the first and 3-0 in the second set but came on to win and briefly stop Agassi's surge.

Inzamam punished for dissent
Pakistan batting star Inzamam-Ul-Haq was handed a suspended sentence here today for showing dissent after his dismissal in the Standard Bank Triangular limited-overs series final at Newlands. Match referee John Reid said the suspended sentence of a 50 per cent match fee fine and one-match suspension would stand until the end of the year.
