  Naik dares CM to sack him
The Shiv Sena, ruling in Maharashtra in alliance with the BJP, appears to be heading for a crisis. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, an influential Sena leader, when asked to resign by the Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, told the CM that he will not resign from the Cabinet and if he has the courage, he may sack him.
  George sues for peace
The Government has attempted to mollify China over its spat with Defence Minister George Fernandes, even as Fernandes attempted in his own way to smoothen ruffled feathers by saying he had always wanted to create "peace and amity" between India and its neighbours.

US experts echo fears
Defence Minister George Fernandes' dark forebodings about potential Chinese military threat to India has plenty of takers in the strategic community in the US, although opinion is divided over his assertion that Tibet is bristling with nuclear weapons pointed at Indian targets.
House panel chief flays govt on power ordinance
Adding another dimension to the controversy over the ordinance on power, the chairman of a parliamentary committee has accused the BJP government of "gross impropriety" and attempting to bypass Parliament. Accusing the government of bypassing all norms of parliamentary democracy, the CPI(M) has called for the withdrawal of the ordinance.

Gill goes after AIR chief
Despite being dogged by the uncertainty of his own tenure, Prasar Bharati CEO S S Gill has been stirring up controversy elsewhere. Last week, he ordered a "preliminary" inquiry into the conduct of O P Kejriwal, Director General, All India Radio. Moreover, he has now issued a letter restraining Kejriwal from attending an international broadcasting conference.
IOC forced to start Panipat refinery
With the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) yet to even begin pre-trial runs on several pieces of critical equipment for its 6 mn tonne refinery at Panipat, alarm bells are ringing in the petroleum ministry. The reason for the panic is that, while the refinery has already been delayed by ten months, IOC will be forced to start operations soon without critical equipment becoming operational. This is likely to be detrimental to its profitability and IOC is likely to even run into losses.
