  Yeltsin snubs Left again in key posts
All the three bete noires of the Russian Left have been entrusted with key posts by President Boris Yeltsin after getting his nominee Sergei Kiriyenko elected premier by the Duma recently. Anatoly Chubais has been appointed chairman of Russia's vast industrial sector, Boris Berezovsky has become executive secretary of the "Commonwealth of Independent States," while Boris Nemtsov has been retained Deputy Premier.

The United States has to reassess its relationship with Pakistan and stop "appeasing" it in view of the recent test firing of Ghauri missile and reports that Islamabad had offered to share nuclear arms technology with Baghdad, Congressman Frank Pallone has said.

Daimler, Chrysler agree on $40bn merger
Germany's Daimler-Benz AG confirmed on Thursday that it would merge with Chrysler Corp on a deal worth $40 bn to form the world's fifth-largest car producer, headquartered jointly in Stuttgart and Michigan. The new company, to be called Daimler Chrysler, would enhance earnings for shareholders in both companies and result in cost savings of 2.5 bn marks ($1.4 bn) next year.
Piracy curbed Asia's economic growth, shows software study
The Business Software Alliance (BSA) said on Thursday software piracy had cost Southeast Asian economies millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. "Software piracy cost Southeast Asian governments over $246.3 million in tax revenues in 1996," BSA said in a report examining the contribution packaged software made to the economies of the region.
