Pawar off to woo Moopanar
Congress Lok Sabha leader Sharad Pawar yesterday reached Chennai on a potentially important visit, coming as it does a few days after Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) chief G K Moopanar called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi amid speculation of a reunion of the two parties. During his stay there, he is expected to talk to Moopanar, TNCC chief K V Thangkabalu and sundry other leaders.

Pak Christians targeted at bishop's funeral
Several houses and shops belonging to Christians were burnt down by extremist Muslims as more than 20,000 Christians took part in the funeral of bishop John Joseph and vowed to fight for the abolition of the controversial blasphemy law in the Pakistani city of Faisalabad.

Indian loses in race to take on pro-Pak Burton

Despite having the backing of the Democratic Party, the Indian-American scientist from Indianapolis lost the party's primary election last week to a "rebel" candidate. In the process, he failed to challenge Republican Congressman and prominent India-baiter Dan Burton, who will bid for a ninth term in the House of Representatives in Congressional elections scheduled for November.

Sena pays the price for Naik's dismissal
The dismissal of former Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Naik from the State Cabinet on Friday had its repercussions felt in Thane on Sunday, when Shiv Sena nominee to the Legislative Council, Sashikant Thosar, lost to Vasant Davkhare of the Congress by six votes.
