  Indian loses in race to take on pro-Pak Burton
Nag Nagarajan had everything going for him. Except, he says, for his name. Despite having the backing of the Democratic Party, the Indian-American scientist from Indianapolis lost the party's primary election last week to a "rebel" candidate. In the process, he failed to challenge Republican Congressman and prominent India-baiter Dan Burton, who will bid for a ninth term in the House of Representatives in Congressional elections scheduled for November.
  Daimler eyes Nissan Diesel stake
Germany's Daimler-Benz AG, fresh from clinching a mega-merger deal with Chrysler Corp, now appears to be aiming for control of ailing Japanese truck maker Nissan Diesel Motor Co. Daimler was in talks with Nissan about buying one-third or more of the truck maker's shares and that a deal could be reached by next month.

Sharif puts IPPS onus on Bhutto
In an apparent attempt to wriggle his regime out of the controversy surrounding power projects, Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif has launched a scathing attack on the previous Benazir Bhutto government for allegedly indulging in "corrupt practices" while awarding the deals.
Rwanda throws out UN human rights chief
The Rwandan Government has suspended the local mission of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and ordered its spokesman out of the country, officials said Saturday. UN officials said that the Kigali authorities had also ordered the UN human rights spokesman Jose-Luis Herero to leave Rwanda for allegedly endangering state security.

World gets richer, earth hotter and poorer
Even developing countries are richer than ever. But melting icecaps in the Andes and dried-up rivers in China show a world whose pulse is slowing, according to data gathered by environmental researchers. "The world today is economically richer and environmentally poorer than ever," said Lester R Brown, president of Worldwatch institute, which released its Vital Sign 1998 report on environmental trends.
Pak Christians targeted at bishop's funeral
Several houses and shops belonging to Christians were burnt down by extremist Muslims as more than 20,000 Christians took part in the funeral of bishop John Joseph and vowed to fight for the abolition of the controversial blasphemy law in the Pakistani city of Faisalabad.
