  Sanctions' impact inflated by US, say Indian officials
A day after imposing economic sanctions on India, the United States yesterday put out what government officials described as highly-inflated figures of the cost of these sanctions. According to a White House release, the potential scope of the sanctions totals close to $ 21 billion. While government officials admitted that the sanctions would certainly hurt the country, at the same time pointing out that the US figures were alarmist.
  Russia may help India as world bashing continues
India yesterday called upon its oldest diplomatic ally, Russia, to support it in its hour of need. The government has been heartened by Russia's response to its five tests, with foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov openly announcing that Russia would not support an international cartel of sanctions against New Delhi.

CTBT now "irrelevant", says Pak
Pakistan said on Thursday that international accords on nuclear non-proliferation like the CTBT and the NPT "stood irrelevant" following the Indian tests this week. "The balance of power has been tilted and asymmetries have been exacerbated," added Tariq Altaf, the spokesman for the Pakistan foreign ministry.
Senators seek N-plan capping
Powerful US Senators yesterday called for not only freezing, but capping and rolling back India's nuclear program. But in a significant stand, senior Clinton administration officials said it was not a feasible proposition and "in the near term what is achievable is to ban all nuclear testing and ban additional production of unsafeguarded fissile material that can be used to make bombs".

Pawar plan to wrest RS, LC seats
The reshuffle and the resultant discontent in the saffron alliance could not have come at a good time for Congress leader Sharad Pawar. Pawar wants to extend his stunning feat of Lok Sabha elections to the forthcoming elections to six Rajya Sabha and 10 Legislative Council seats.

Completing a sudden u-turn, the Congress yesterday capped divisions in the party on the Pokhran nuclear tests, refusing to raise any questions on what happened and went with the BJP in saying the issue was one of national interest on which "every Indian stands united".
