US Senators seek capping of Indian N-plan
Powerful US Senators called for not only freezing, but capping and rolling back India's nuclear program. But in a significant stand, senior Clinton administration officials said it was not a feasible proposition and "in the near term what is achievable is to ban all nuclear testing and ban additional production of unsafeguarded fissile material that can be used to make bombs".
Be good and F-16s may just fly in, Pak told
Pakistan can reap a bonanza in the form of resumed arms supply from the United States -- including return of its 28 sequestered F-16 planes -- if it agrees not to proceed with nuclear testing in retaliation for the Indian tests. The proposal to repeal the so-called Pressler Amendment was first floated in Congress today by former CIA director James Woolsley.

India may feel the pinch of American sanctions
Punitive US economic sanctions halting millions of dollars of American aid and loan guarantees to India kicked in within hours of President Clinton issuing a Presidential determination following India's nuclear tests. Alternately angry and disappointed by a country he genuinely liked, Clinton signed the papers on board the presidential plane Air Force One shortly before it touched down in Germany.

Duke plans big move into Australia
Duke Energy Corp plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to build an Australian gas and power business over the next few years. The US energy company has been eyeing moves into Australia for the last five years and now plans to dive in, buying gas assets, linking them to power generation, and becoming an active gas and electricity trader as it is in the United States.
