  India has not misled US: Jaswant
The Indian government on Monday lashed out at US officials for accusing India of being "duplicitous" and saying they had been "seriously misled" by India on the conduct of its five nuclear tests last week. A key aide of the PM who was closely involved in the planning of last week's tests, Jaswant Singh, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission led the rebuttal, saying he would not respond to the language of US spokesmen which was used "more out of frustration than out of reason."
  George defends position on China
Union defence minister George Fernandes has asserted that he had never said China was enemy number one. "I had merely said in my perception of national threat China was number one," said Fernandes on his first visit to Mumbai after taking oath as Defence Minister.

Sanctions may hit Haryana power and road projects
With the US and Japan slapping economic sanctions on India, the World Bank-funded soft loan to Haryana may be in for some major problems. Haryana was to supposed get $800 million (approximately Rs 3,200 crore) for power and road sectors. The threat to oppose loans -- if carried out -- can prove to be a setback to the ambitious power reforms and highway upgrading programmes of the HVP-BJP Government in the state.
ULFA outrage over NSCN bid for Assam's Naga tracts
Fresh trouble seems to be on the cards along the sensitive Assam-Nagaland border with two major outlawed organisations of the region, the NSCN(IM) and ULFA crossing swords over the territorial domination of the two groups. While the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isac Muivah has last week reiterated its original demand for an independent state comprising, the ULFA has retorted back by saying that it will fight for stopping any move to give away Assam areas.

A-I sets in gear evacuation of Indians from Jakarta
The Air-India (A-I) has put in gear operations to airlift approximately 2,000 Indians from riot-ravaged Indonesia within the next four days. Responding to the call to evacuate Indians from Indonesia, which is witnessing a bloody round of rioting against President Suharto's government, the airline on Monday extended to Jakarta its Singapore flight A-I-440/431, which is operated with a 203-seater A310 aircraft.
