  Military against Suharto's exit
Indonesian armed forces Commander General Wiranto dismissed a call by the speaker of parliament today for President Suharto to resign, setting the stage for a confrontation between civilians and military. Wiranto said Suharto remained responsible for steering the nation through reform and that Speaker Harmoko had made an individual statement with no legal power.
  Annan moots sops for Pak
In the wake of Pakistan deciding to go ahead with nuclear tests in response to the five by India, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and US President Bill Clinton have come forward with proposals to assure Islamabad of security guarantees from other countries as incentive to refrain from testing nuclear weapons.

Correspondence has been flying thick and fast between young Indian professionals and students worrying about reports that visas for Indians are being frozen, reduced, withdrawn or revoked.
