  Anand inches closer
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand inched closer to his third straight title of the season outclassing Granda Zuniga of Peru in the penultimate round of the seventh Torneo Magistral Open Chess Tournament. Anand stayed clear off the second placed Peter Svidler of Russia by one full point to brighten his chances of winning the crown -- remaining leader among the 10-players throughout the tournament.
  Mijatovic scripts a Real triumph
Real Madrid ended a 32-year wait to be crowned European Champions for the seventh time when they defeated Juventus 1-0 in a tough, uncompromising European Cup final. The only goal came after 67 minutes when Yugoslav striker Predrag Mijatovic took advantage of a momentary breakdown in the Juventus defence to make time and crack the ball home from an acute close-range angle.

Czechs shock United States
The Czech Republic moved a step closer to reaching the final of the World Team Cup after scoring a 2-1 victory over the United States. Australia, meanwhile, kept themselves in contention with a 2-1 win over Sweden. The two countries will meet today to decide who will go through to Sunday's Final.
Merchant, Chapman enter quarter-finals
England's Roxton Chapman, Yasin Merchant and Geet Sethi topped their individual billiards groups at the end of the second day's play of the Alpic Om Agarwal Billiards and Snooker tournament at the Garware Club House. Chapman secured his place in the quarter-finals with two wins.

South Africa beat England by three wickets in the first One-Day international at the Oval yesterday. South Africa successfully chased the England total after restricting the hosts to 223 for nine in the first One-day international at the Oval.
