  US, India rebuild contacts, promise to keep in touch
The United States and India began the delicate task of reconstructing strained ties with the first official contact between the two sides in the aftermath of last week's nuclear tests. The Indian envoy conveyed to the American side, New Delhi's unilateral decision on adopting a nuclear test moratorium. The two sides also discussed their common desire to keep things from hotting up on the India-Pakistan front.
  Curb chest-thumping, Naidu cautions PM
A concerned Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has warned Prime Minister A B Vajpayee not to allow jingoistic celebrations of the recent nuclear tests, saying they would have a negative impact on the country. Naidu has advised the Prime Minister against allowing the creation of an atmosphere of war-mongering.

Clinton urged to cancel China trip
More than 150 members of Congress has demanded that President Bill Clinton cancel his June trip to China in the wake of allegations that Washington exported sensitive missile technology to Beijing. The action has come amid a furor over reports the Clinton administration overruled the US Defense and State Departments by easing satellite exports to China in 1996.
Vajpayee tells Mahajan to play it cool
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is learnt to have advised his political advisor Pramod Mahajan not to create unnecessary controversies. Mahajan, who has recently shot his off mouth and tread on many a toe in recent weeks, is likely to be given a Rajya Sabha ticket from Maharashtra in the forthcoming elections to the Upper House and also be inducted in the Union Cabinet.

Task force to frame informatics policy
The government has set up a task force to draft the national informatics policy aimed at transforming India into an information technology (IT) superpower within next ten years. The task force will identify, within a month, immediate steps that government needs to take to give a massive boost to India's IT industry.
Expressway speeds towards finishing line
The twin-tube tunnel, a part of the proposed Mumbai-Pune Expressway, is well underway in all four sections from Panvel to Dehu Road. The present pace of work clearly indicates that the expressway is likely to be completed in a couple of months ahead of the January 2000 deadline. The gigantic project involves everything from transplantation and plantation of trees, levelling of land, building bridges, carving out tunnels and finally, laying the concrete road.
