  US blows the whistle on Pak tests
With an eagerness and alacrity not normally associated with spookdom, US intelligence officials on Tuesday repeatedly blew the whistle on Pakistan's `imminent' nuclear tests enlisting the media to drum up a warning. US intelligence sources are saying that Pakistan is now ready to conduct nuclear tests any time it wants.
  Govt reschedules farmers' loans
The Government has directed the Reserve Bank of India and NABARD to reschedule loans to farmers and waive off interest on it in view of the large scale suicides by farmers following crop failure in several parts of the country. Minister of State for Agriculture Sompal admitted that the flow of credit to farmers had not been good, forcing the farmers to take loan from money lenders who charged exorbitant rates of interest.

Mahanta jolted, one more minister quits
The crisis in the ruling Asom Gana Parishad took a new turn with senior leader and education minister Thaneswar Boro tendering his resignation from the two-year old Mahanta government. Boro, a former president of the regional party, who was three days ago projected by the party dissidents as their candidate to replace Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, resigned as he was caught in a controversy over the row between the pro-Mahanta and the anti-Mahanta camps.
Damage-control begins as Govt wakes up to high cost of China card
After a brief but disastrous attempt to reshape India's China policy, the Vajpayee Government is now trying to undo the damage and put Sino-Indian relations back on an even keel. In a major peace offering, the Government has asked President K R Narayanan to break convention and receive Chinese Ambassador-designate Zhou Gang's credentials at a select function on Monday along with the Ambassador-designate of Belarus.

RPI still split over Cong issue
The Republican Party of India (RPI) seemed to be heading for a split with Prakash Ambedkar, MP and a member of the party's presidium, reiterating his call to Dalits to boycott the coming by-elections in Maharashtra if the Congress failed to clarify its stand on alliance with the party by June 3. Ambedkar, son of the RPI founder and Dalit leader late Dr B R Ambedkar, had announced the boycott on Sunday, but other leaders said it was his individual view and not a party decision.
