PM rejects third party mediation
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has rejected third party mediation between India and Pakistan for resolving outstanding issues, and asked the five permanent members of the U N security council to demonstrate in "a real manner" their commitment to the goal of general and complete disarmament. This was conveyed by Vajpayee to U N secretary general Kofi Annan during a 15-minute telephonic conversation with him yesterday.

UN remarks on India unwarranted, says Govt
India yesterday sharply criticised the United Nations Security Council for making "unwarranted references" to it while reacting to the nuclear tests by Pakistan. This obfuscated the nature of Islamabad's nuclear and missile programmes which were based on clandestine acquisitions and transfers, the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

Ultras kill ex-minister's kin; abduct brother
In a major strike in south Kashmir district of Anantnag, militants killed Mohammad Afzal Dar, the brother-in-law of former union minister of state for home, Mohammad Maqbool Dar and abducted his brother. According to police, the militants abducted Dar from his house in Deyalgam on Saturday night and shot him after dragging him 50 yards away.
