MUMBAI, June 9: "A gentleman, seldom seen or heard, but one who always delivered," was one way veteran journalist Jermano Albuquerque was remembered at a condolence meeting held by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium today.Albuquerque, a former Press Trust of India sports correspondent, passed away last week at the age of 77.
All the speakers, fellow journalists and friends of Albuquerque, agreed that he "was a quite man, a thorough gentleman and a supreme example of staying in the shadows while contributing to journalism in the most cultured fashion."
"I always looked upto him," said Rajan Bala, sports editor Afternoon Despatch and Courier.
Eddie Fernandes, former sports editor of The Indian Express, said Albuquerque was a good friend, a lover of sport and a good Catholic.
KN Prabhu, former sports editor of The Times of India said though he did not know him well, Albuquerque was a man who made an impression in his own quite way.
"He nevercomplained," said former Times of India correspondent K Bhaskaran, "and took everything in his stride." Columnist SK Sham said that "Albu", along with SV Sheshadri, was among two of the finest to have worked in tandem.
"And the most gentle of men" was then remembered the way he would have probably liked. With a two-minute silence.
