MUMBAI, June 9: Girls outshone boys in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) results for Mumbai division declared today. Two girls of the same college - the Atomic Energy Jr College, Anushakti Nagar - shared the overall first rank. Prerna Goel and Shubha Parameshwar Hegde, both students of science (vocational), tied at 96.50 per cent. The pass percentage for Mumbai this year went up from 60.93 to 69.24 per cent. This is the first time that two girls have shared the overall first position. However, in individual categories too girls continued their dominance. While Gauri Wable of D G Ruparel College topped the science stream with 93.83 per cent marks, Sonia Daryanani of St Xavier's College bagged the top position in Arts with a score of 83.33 per cent. Only the commerce stream bucked the trend with Abhijit Deshmukh of the R A Poddar College and Gavin Gonsalves of N M College tying for the top slot at 88 per cent.
The first position in the Minimum Competence for Vocational Course went to Pradnya Hatkar(82.83 per cent) of the Sathye College, Vile Parle, while among the backward classes students and night school student Bapurao Valekar of D G Ruparel College, Mahim and Mahesh Diwekar of Vikas Night High School and Junior College, Vikhroli bagged the top slots respectively. Zahra Yusuf Federal of the D G Ruparel College topped the handicapped category scoring 90.83 per cent. She had also topped in the category in her SSC two years ago. In all there were 23 girls in the merit list of 53. Last year, only 13 girls had figured in the merit list.
Some ups and downs were seen in the performance of colleges too, for instance, D G Ruparel College, which has only 17 students in the merit list, down two from last year's 19. Principal P M Sule, when contacted, was still analysing the result. He, however, said it was "a healthy sign that some institutions are coming up." Principal of Jai Hind College, N W Shivdasani, was not too happy with his college's performance. His college has only three students in the meritlist, down five from last year's eight.
Quite surprisingly, quite a few students fared badly in English. As Shivdasani said: "Students may not be taking English seriously. But then some students with convent school background have also fared disappointingly in English." However, Sathye College, Ramnarain Ruia College, Swami Vivekananda Junior College and Atomic Energy Jr College improved their performance this year. Atomic Energy Jr College had only four students in merit lists last year. This year it has 12.
Principal R T Sane of Ruia College complained that the results were compiled in a shoddy manner. The total marks were not tallying with individual marks in the cases of about a dozen of his boys.
