All eyes rivetted on Paris for fete du foot
They are 60 feet tall and weigh 38 tonnes each. Accompanied by 4,500 dancers and acrobats dressed as roller-blading fish, chessmen, ostriches and baobab trees, they brought Paris to a standstill lastnight as France celebrates the opening of the World Cup as only the French can: magnificently, but incomprehensibly.

Scots get ready for Brazilian rendezvous
Scotland finally leave their refuge in the south of France to keep their Paris rendezvous with Brazil, reputedly the most formidable team in international football. Curiously, none among Craig Brown's fit and soundly-prepared squad of 22, working out in the heat as the Mistral swept through the place, showed any signs of anxiety.

Brazil gun for history, Scots run away from it
Brazil is gunning for its fifth World Cup title. Scotland is trying to get past the first round at the eighth attempt. The opening game of the biggest World Cup ever brings together the championship's most successful nation against the one with the worst record in the finals.
