CPI-M MLA gunned down in Bihar
A day after the gunning down of a former Bihar minister, unidentified gunmen yesterday shot dead CPI-M MLA Ajit Kumar Sarkar and his two supporters in Purnea district of the State. The gunmen on a motor-cycle fired from automatic rifles at a car carrying Sarkar, a member of the CPI-M State committee, and his two supporters at Subhasnagar killing them instantly.

US says Kashmir is bilateral row
In a significant change in its earlier stance, United States yesterday said Kashmir problem ultimately has to be settled bilaterally between India and Pakistan through dialogue. Meanwhile, India has repeated its offer for bilateral talks with Pakistan saying New Delhi is ready to go "the extra mile" for friendship with its neighbours.

Mamata pats Atal's Govt
The three-month-old Atal Behari Vajpayee government, which has of late come under attack from its allies and opposition parties alike, earned a reprieve of sorts with the Trinamool Congress reiterating its full and unconditional support to it. She lauded the Vajpayee government as being "an assertive Government which had delivered its goods."

US to coerce China into non-proliferation regime
The United States is working to press China into codifying into laws its promises made earlier this month to restrict the supply of missile technology to Pakistan. The five permanent UN Security Council members pledged at their June 4 meeting in Geneva to prevent equipment, materials or technology transfer that can in any way assist programmes in India and Pakistan for nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles capable of delivering such weapons.
