Clinical Klinsmann raps USA
Captain Juergen Klinsmann made one goal and scored another as European champions Germany started their World Cup campaign yesterday with a workmanlike 2-0 victory over the United States. Klinsmann's place in the German team was in doubt in the months before the World Cup. But the 33-year-old cast aside criticism of his form by engineering an important three points for the three-times champions ahead of a tough clash with the strong Yugoslavs in group F.

Scotland earn their first point
Scotland midfielder Craig Burley scored in the 67th minute to grab a 1-1 draw against Norway in their group `A' match yesterday. Earlier, Havard Flo had slid in at the far post to nod the ball home to give Norway the lead. The result gives Scotland one point after two games with Morocco to play in their final match. Norway have two points but have to face holders Brazil in their last game.

Marcelo Salas ready for another strike
Chile striker Marcelo Salas, joint leading goalscorer at the World Cup finals, is back in business and set to line up against Austria today. Salas suffered a thigh strain at the weekend and missed training with teammates. But reports on Monday indicated he had done some light solo work, was recovering well and would line up alongside Ivan Zamorano.
