India may hire Dole's firm for lobbying
In the high-stakes influence-peddling game that animates political Washington, Pakistan has stolen a march by employing a former White Huse aide, Lanny Davis as a lobbyist. While Islamabad has scored with hiring Davis, India is considering hiring Zerner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, a firm that employs former Presidential candidate Bob Dole and former Senate majority leader George Mitchell among others.

Team for Bengal too
Bowing to the wishes of its ally Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress, the Centre has decided to send a fact-finding team to West Bengal. Headed by an Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry, P D Shenoy, the three-member team will "assess the law and order situation in the State" and focus on the "alleged atrocities being committed on women and members of the weaker sections."

SEBI steps in to halt slide; Sensex goes up by 240 pts
The stock markets rose like a phoenix from the ashes on Wednesday as the Sensex (BSE sensitive index) staged a scintillating recovery of 240 points, thanks to the SEBI's decision to impose a partial ban on short sales. The record gain in Sensex has finally brought relief to the markets which were falling since the middle of last month.

Contingency oil plan reviewed
A series of meetings were held in the Petroleum Ministry yesterday to review the situation arising out of the Gujarat Electricity Board's failure to restore electricity supplies for pumping crude oil from Kandla to various refineries across the country. The meetings, chaired by Petroleum Secretary Probir Sengupta, were attended by the marketing directors of all the public sector oil companies as well as senior officials of the Railways and the Ministry of Surface Transport.
