250 border villagers of Poonch district cross over to PoK
In addition to increased militancy and unprovoked firing by Pakistan troops from across the border, the Jammu and Kashmir Government now has a new problem to contend with -- migration by villagers living near the Line of Control (LoC) to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). In an exodus that began last fortnight, more than 250 persons of the minority community have crossed over to PoK from villages in the border district of Poonch.

Central team to assess cyclone damage: PM
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday visited Gandhidham to meet the cyclone-affected people of Kandla. In his address to the officials, residents and affected people, he referred to the day of the cyclone as the "black day" and said that the Centre would give as much monetary help as required. After the exact details are sent from here and the team set up by the Centre to review the situation submits its report, money wil be sent immediately, he added.

Country likely to face major salt shortage
The country may be in for a major shortage of salt, with last week's cyclone having destroyed the salt pans on the Gujarat coast which contributed about 70 per cent of the country's total production. Work has come to a standstill and there is little chance of production starting again in six months.
