A tree-top protest that refuses to grow
For six months, Julia Hill has lived on a plywood perch no bigger than a queen-sized bed, 18 stories above tree stumps the size of small cars. It's a record-setting act of defiance that has galvanised the struggle to defend what remains of a glorious Redwood forest as old as Christianity.

When it comes to street protests, indigenous people are usually among the demonstrators demanding certain rights or concessions. In the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, however, it is the hill tribes who have become the target of rallies.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa should be wearing its supporting suspenders by October, experts said, but it is too early to say when it will be safe to climb the monument. Trying to keep the 12th century, 55-meter-high tower from leaning further, experts have girdled the monument in steel. Now preliminary work to attach a pair of steel braces to help straighten the tower has just begun, and the suspenders should be in place by the end of October.
