No bowing to Jaya threat: Advani
Union Home Minister L K Advani has said that the Vajpayee Government would not succumb to pressure from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to dismiss the Karunanidhi Government in Tamil Nadu. He also denied reports that the BJP had a pre-poll understanding with Jayalalitha to dismiss the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu. The Union home minister also contradicted senior BJP leader K L Sharma's statement that the Government would pass a legislation to overturn any adverse verdict in the Ayodhya case.

Moscow ends atomic power blockade to India
Russia breached a long-standing western atomic energy blockade against India by signing an accord on nuclear power reactors. Under the agreement, signed by visiting Russian atomic energy minister Yevgeni Adamov and Atomic Energy Commission chairman R. Chidambaram yesterday, Russia will sell two nuclear power reactors to be set up in Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu. In clinching the $ 2.6-billion deal with India, Russia is reasserting its determination to sustain a long-term political partnership with India and underscoring its willingness to risk the displeasure of the United States.

New GIC chief plans to give full freedom to subsidiaries
The new chairman of the General Insurance Corporation, D Sengupta, is planning to redefine the corporation's role vis-a-vis its four subsidiaries in a fast-changing scenario where private sector players may soon make an entry. Sengupta, who continues to hold concurrent charge as chairman-cum-managing director of New India Assurance, says that he favours total operational freedom for the four companies.
