Now Fritz falls to Anand blitz

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
FRANKFURT, June 21: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand of India added one more feather in his cap by defeating world computer chess champion `Fritz 5' by the margin of 1, 5-0, 5 in a two-game mini match dubbed as `Frankfurt classic duel' held here late Saturday night.

After winning the first game with a marathon of 94 moves from the black pieces, Anand did not stretch himself in the second and drew comfortably.

Fritz 5 is the latest commercial version developed by Chessbase, Germany and it is being used by all the leading chess players in the world. However Anand was playing against Fritz 5 on a much faster computer developed by Siemens Nixdorf. The Fritz 5 was running on dual Pentium II board with 333 MHZ Cpus with each having 256 MB temporary memory. Fritz is considered as the highest rated computer program in the world with 2580 rating.

Anand with his 2770 rating and a genius in faster versions of game started cautiously by going for exchange of queens on as early as eighth move. This reduced thesoftware's natural advantage and Anand easily obtained equality with his exact play from the black side of Spanish opening. Anand reduced the material over the board by going for exchanges and started playing cat and mouse game with the world computer champion. Anand's patience paid dividends as Fritz 5 weakened his position on the 42 nd move by pushing a pawn. Thereafter there was no stopping Anand. The blitzking from Chennai went hammer and tong against the white Queenside and started picking up pawns at regular intervals. The presence of opposite coloured bishops made Anand's task difficult but the Indian maestro displayed exemplary technique to force Fritz 5 to surrender with just few seconds to spare. Anand's adoption of Vladimir Kramnik's pet English opening moves forced Fritz 5 to come out desperately with Tarrasch defence which is considered as double edged weapon. However the champion from Chennai did not lose control at any moment and the game was agreed drawn after 46 moves. With this win now Anandhas surpassed Garry Kasparov in another version of chess supremacy.

Garry Kasparov had lost to IBM Deep Blue two years ago to become first world champion to succumb to the Guiles of a machine. Anand, who won the speed chess event last night at the same venue has established himself as the computer beater ahead of Kasparov with this victory.
