MUMBAI, June 21: A first-class Judicial Magistrate of the Thane district court has been sacked for showing leniency towards gangsters and hardened criminals. The Bombay High Court served dismissal orders on Nagesh Sevekar, whose controversial ruling included dreaded gangster Arun Gawli's transfer from Amravati to the Thane jail. He had also granted bail to the prime accused in the multi-crore credit card scam rejecting Thane police's request for extended custody.HC had instituted an enquiry against him after some Thane district jail officials and the police commissioner lodged a complaint with the state government.
The enquiry was conducted by then District Judge K D Patil. The dismissal orders were issued to the magistrate through the District and Sessions Court this weekend.
Sources said that when Gawli was lodged at the Amravati prison, he was brought to the Thane court in connection with a minor offence. Here the gangster applied for his transfer to the Thane jail. The request was granted by thejudge much to the discomfort of the Mumbai police, which wanted to keep Gawli as far away from Mumbai as possible.
