Rathore excels for Jalandhar XI

CHANDIGARH, June 21: Vikram Rathore's quickfire knock (65) helped Jalandhar XI beat PUNCOM by five wickets and win the First Girdhari Lal Joshi Memorial at Ludhiana yesterday.

Rathore treated both the PUNCOM spinners and medium pacers with utter disdain and set up his side's fine run chase after PUNCOM had posted a reasonable looking 222 for 5 in the allotted 40 overs.

For PUNCOM, Munish Arora (80) and Dinesh Mongia (66) did the bulk of scoring. Harminder Kaku was unbeaten on 46.

Munish Arora was declared the man of the match, as well as the best allrounder of the tournament while Rathore was the best batsman and Mithun Gupta was the best bowler of the tourney.

Scores: PUNCOM: 222 for 5 (Munish Arora 80, Dinesh Mongia 66, Harminder Kaku 46 n.o.) lost to Jalandhar XI: 223 for 5 (Vikram Rathore 65, Harminder Singh 40 n.o., Manav Mehra 35, Ubaid Kamal 3-42).

Title for Anil
Anil Sharma won the open billiards in the YMCA Open Billiards and Snooker championship at the YMCA Hall, Sector 11 today.

He beat B K Khurana 503-365 in the final. Anil, however failed in his attempt at the open snooker title, finishing second to Sandeep Duggal.

Sandeep Duggal beat Sameer Bhalla 37-71, 54-30, 59-30, 37-54, 68-57 in the last round robin clash. Rajeev Bhardwaj beat Rakesh Gupta 57-34, 40-61, 46-20 in the final of the handicap event to bag the title.

Godrej Club win
Godrej Club beat Greenway Club by two wickets in the ninth Bathany Cup cricket tournament at Ramdarbar today.

Modi Xerox beat Bombay XI by 12 runs in the other match.

Greenway Club could manage only 111 runs. Girish Bhanot captured 4 for 22. Then Arun Tuli (29) and Vaneet Chawla (26) helped Godrej Club to recover from early setbacks.

Scores: Greenway: 111 (Binder Singh 31, Girish Bhanot 4-22, Rajesh Arora 2-25, Vinod Binta 2-22) lost to Godrej: 113 for 8 (Arun Tuli 29, Vaneet Chawla 26, Sunil 3-14). Modi Xerox: 183 for 8 (Amarjeet 75, Upender 28, Ajay 2-31, Sandeep 2-40) beat Bombay XI: 171 (Sanjeev 32, Kuldip 38 n.o., Sher Singh 5-14, Sanjay Triwedi 2-35).

Purang shines
Haryana Civil Secretariat XI beat Prudential XI by 40 runs to enter the final of the third Shine Star cricket tournament. LIC XI beat Bathany XI by 42 runs in the other semifinal.

Scores
: HCS: 142 (Rakesh Purang 54, Rahul Panta 3-36, Porus 2-21) beat Prudential: 102 (Balwinder 23, Arpinder Bedi 3-24). LIC: 123 (Varinder 23, Ramesh 5-24, Anil 3-23 beat Bathany: 81 (Rajinder 23, Devinder 5-15).

Youth Club win
Youth Club Dera Bassi beat Swaraj Engines by five wickets to enter the final of the first Mittal Memorial cricket tournament at S A S Nagar.
