Usha bags 100m title

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
HYDERABAD, June 21: Sprint queen PT Usha lived up to her reputation and romped home without much competition in the women's 100 metres with a timing of 11.55 seconds, on a day when most top athletes bettered their circuit records in the third national atheletic circuit meet.

Usha bettered her Nagercoil timing of 11.85 secs to clinch the gold and a prize money of Rs 5000. The golden girl, however, fell 0.6 second short of the qualifying mark for the Asian Track and Field Meet to be held in Japan next month. Vinita Tripathi and Saraswathy Dey claimed the second and third places respectively.

Jyotirmoyee Sikdar topped the women's 400m nudging out Rosa Kutty and Beenamol, who came second and third respectively. Jyotirmoyee touched the tape with a timing of 54.14 seconds.

It was a close battle in the 3000 metres men's event, with Gulab Chand claiming the top spot and a cash prize of Rs 5,000 with a timing of 8 minutes 30.01 seconds. Harish Tiwari and Ridman Singh took the next two places.
