Police jittery over Sonia's plans to visit Naxal areas
Congress president Sonia Gandhi's 400 km road journey later this week to the Naxalite affected Warangal and Medak districts in Andhra Pradesh has become a matter of concern for the state police. The police are understood to have objected to Sonia travelling such a long distance by road in the two districts which witnessed frequent encounters with the People's War Group (PWG) extremists in the recent past.

Chaos after the storm: Petro-goods shortage hits North
Reports of shortages in petroleum products -- `dryouts', in oil jargon -- have begun reaching the petroleum ministry, from areas in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Particularly affected are the Jodhpur-Ajmer belt in Rajasthan, and Jallandhar-Bhatinda-Patiala region in Punjab. Most of the petrol pumps which are putting up "out of stock" boards over the last four days, particularly for diesel, are those affiliated to the smaller oil companies -- HPCL, BPCL, and IBP.

RS fiasco: Pawar men get notices
The Congress yesterday issued show-cause notices to Praful Patel, Lok Sabha member and a close confidant of Maharashtra strongman Sharad Pawar, and Satish Chaturvedi (MLA) for "openly working" for a non-Congress candidate, resulting in the defeat of Congress official nominee RD Pradhan. The decision to issue show-cause notices returnable on June 30 to Patel and Chaturvedi was taken at the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
