TN warned against opposing Cauvery project
The Karnataka Government will reconsider the release of five tmc feet of water from the Krishna river to Tamil Nadu if the latter does not stop objecting to the Cauvery drinking water projects taken up for Bangalore city, state Irrigation Minister K N Nage Gowda said on Wednesday. The minister said Karnataka was required to release five tmc feet of water to fulfill the drinking water needs of Chennai city under the Telugu Ganga scheme.

Govt proposes multi-member vigilance panel
As per the Supreme Court ruling on autonomy of investigative agencies, the Government has decided to give statutory status to the Chief Vigilance Commissioner -- but with a twist. The draft statute, which is pending with the law ministry, proposes that the Central Vigilance Commission be a multi-member body which will select the heads of the investigating agencies, including the chiefs of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate.

Punjab Govt hikes bus fares, foodgrain cess
The Punjab Government yesterday proposed a massive hike in bus fares and levy of cess on foodgrains as part of the measures to mobilise additional resources to bridge the gap of Rs 400 crore in the Rs 2,500 crore 1998-99 annual plan. This year's plan is up by 19% as compared to last year's plan.
