Border melts as people on both sides gather to celebrate a mela
For one day, the border melted and the people forgot three wars and the accumulated bitterness of 50 years. While the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Pakistani Rangers exchanged fire at Ballarh in Basantar, just 500 yards away at Chamliyal, people from either side of the international border danced to drum beats. It's the annual Chamliyal mela, celebrated at two spots, 600 yards apart.

Uplinking facility no threat to DD, says Naqvi
Satellite channels which have just been permitted to uplink from Indian soil will not pose any threat to Doordarshan, Minister of State for Information Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Thursday. As part of the `clean-up' of the system, Naqvi said the structure of All India Radio and Doordarshan will be revamped by the Vajpayee government.

Congress demands disturbed area status for Doda
The Congress has demanded that the whole Doda district of Jammu, where two massacres have taken place, the latest a couple of days ago, be declared a disturbed area followed by sending of more paramilitary and army forces there. The demand came after the party's three-member team returned from Doda after a visit there.
