Flood situation worsens in Arunachal; 20 dead

ITANAGAR, June 26: The flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh, which had improved slightly, worsened today following heavy downpour since Wednesday.Official sources said traffic connecting the capital town Itanagar and the rest of the country via Banderdewa has been affected following a large number of landslides and washing away of the road and culverts at many points. Long-distance buses and trucks carrying essential commodities are stranded at Banderdewa since yesterday due to a heavy landslides at Kharshingsa area, the source said. Men and some materials have been transshipped to Itanagar and Border Road Task Force (BRTF) personnel are working round the clock to clear the road, the sources said. The State has been experiencing heavy rains for the past five weeks claiming 20 lives in floods and landslides, the sources said adding Sagalee, the sub-divisional headquarter of Papumpare district alone reported 17 deaths.
