NEW DELHI, June 26: In a radical departure from tradition, students seeking admission to various courses in Delhi University (DU) in the current academic session will be able to use their mother's name for the purpose if they so desired.DU Registrar K K Panda said on Thursday that the decision was taken recently by the DU Academic Council (AC) on the basis of a recommendation of the standing committee on academic matters.
``We are the first to introduce this provision wherein students can use their mother's name for various formalities during admission and migration. So the children of unwed, divorced or separated mothers can fill in their mother's name in the slot which was earlier exclusively meant for the father,'' he added.
This year, DU has made another important change with regard to the five per cent admission quota for children of armed forces personnel.
The provision was meant for the children of those personnel who were killed or rendered handicapped in action during war or externalaggression. Keeping in view that the armed forces and para-military personnel were getting killed or handicapped during internal duties, especially in insurgency-prone areas, the provision has been now expanded to include those killed or handicapped during official duty.
