Three dissidents released as Air Force One touches down
US President Bill Clinton arrived in Beijing on the eve of talks with Jiang Zemin that were overshadowed by a pre-summit clash earlier in the day over the detentions of several mainland dissidents. Earlier in the day, Clinton had criticized the detentions of a number of mainland pro-democracy activists - including two men in the ancient silk road city of Xi'an. While two of the men, dissident Yang Hai and human rights lawyer Zhang Jiankang, were released yesterday evening, the third was released six hours later.

Russia rejects Pakistan plea to set up nuclear power plant
Moscow has outright rejected Islamabad's request to set up a nuclear power plant in Pakistan. It has, in fact not even discussed Pakistan's proposal. Moscow's refusal is based on an international agreement that limits exports to nations that spend a part of receipts on military programmes.

Seoul demands apology as 9 bodies found in N Korean sub
Nine bodies with bullet wounds were found inside a captured North Korean submarine on Friday, putting a tragic end to a six-day drama which Seoul called a military provocation by the North. "Nine bodies were found inside the sub," the defence ministry said in a statement. Four had bullet wounds to the head while five other bodies were riddled with bullets.
