Number three proves lucky ally for Novotna
Jana Novotna won her first Grand Slam title yesterday, beating 16th-seeded Nathalie Tauziat in straight sets in the Wimbledon final. Finalist in 1993 and 1997 at Wimbledon, Novotna made it third time lucky by beating her French opponent 6-4 7-6.

Adams joint leader after win over Anand
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand crashed to his first defeat, after enjoying scintillating form this season, when Michael Adams of England scored first career victory over the Indian at the Sparkassen chess meeting 1998. With a shock victory over world number two Anand, Adams joined leader Vladimir Kramnik of Russia to jointly lead the 10-men field after seven rounds in this category-18 event.

SA tighten noose on England
South African wrist spinner Paul Adams took three wickets in the final session to complete another dismal day for England in the third Test yesterday. England, already 1-0 down in the series, ended the third day on 162 for eight in reply to South Africa's 552 for five declared.
