Italy's ex-PM gets jail term
AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
MILAN, July 7: Italian media baron and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was sentenced here today to two years and nine months in prison after he was convicted of corruption. But Berlusconi will probably not serve time because the sentence is only applicable after all legal avenues have been explored, which takes around 10 years. The politician and media tycoon was convicted on charges of bribing tax inspectors with around 380 million Lira (200,000 Dollars) over three years from 1989 to 1992 in connection with his Fininvest Communiations Empire.Prosecutors had called for a three-year jail term. Eight others --Berlusconi's brother Paolo, three Fininvest managers and four tax inspectors -- were also charged over the affairs. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
