Civic excavators swing into action
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, July 8: With 4 excavators pressed into service to clear Vadodara's storm water drains on Wednesday, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has galvanised into action in the wake of complaints of water-logging and choking drainage lines.Officials, led by municipal commissioner G R Aloria, who visited Manjalpur and Makarpura, inspected the drainage manholes submerged under water choking up drains. They found waters mixed with sewerage resulting from malfunctioning of the sewage pumping station in Makarpura. They have started correcting the situation. Road patch work has been started on the main roads in different areas. Six dumpers filled in potholes on the Ajwa road, Waghodia road, Chhani and Gorwa areas. The work will continue during dry spells during the monsoon. The officials also visited the Makarpura GIDC estate to take stock of the situation there. When the Estate was set up, the VMC and the GIDC had entered into an agreement in which the former had agreed to maintain proper civic amenities in the area. The Estate had given some pieces of land to the VMC, which cared less. Though this may not last permanently, the exercise when the monsoon has already set in, for the first time shows the VMC is slowly reacting to public demands. At a rent of Rs. 500 an hour 3 excavators are in action while another has been brought into service by the VMC. The excavators will clear the most affected areas first and move on to other areas, during dry patches between the monsoons. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
