CALCUTTA, July 9: Saying that it tarnished the college's secular character, students of Calcutta's Presidency College today ransacked an unauthorised temple that came up last fortnight in the campus.A small temple-like structure was built in the college premises allegedly with ``the help of Class IV staff and PWD staff.'' A majority of the students protested and told the college authorities in no uncertain terms that they wanted ``the structure to be demolished.''
They broke open the building lock and ransacked it. The Presidency College Students Union said they had to take the action ``as they had no faith in the college authorities.'' Projit Mukherjee, general secretary of the students union said, ``We cannot allow this to happen and we could sense the administration's hand in helping the forces who chose to raise the structure. This would go against rich non-conformist and secular tradition of the college. We won't allow religion to intrude in our college.''
Another students' body in the college, the Presidency College Students' Association condemned the PCSU action and dismissed it as ``an act of hooliganism in the name of secularism.'' The students' union, when asked how they had so far tolerated the other small temples in the campus, said, ``We have no plans to bring the old ones on our present agenda.''
