Pollock named SA captain for Commonwealth Games

DURBAN: Shaun Pollock will captain South Africa's cricket squad at the Commonwealth Games in September. Current captain Hansie Cronje and senior players Allan Donald, Gary Kirsten, Jonty Rhodes and Daryll Cullinan all missed out, but eight members of the team currently touring England were picked.

Squad: Shaun Pollock (captain), Adam Bacher, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Lance Klusener, Dale Benkenstein, Derek Crookes, Nicky Boje, Steve Elworthy, Makhaya Ntini, Paul Adams, Henry Williams, Mark Boucher, Mike Rindel.

Anand to play exhibition tie

CHENNAI: World No 2 Vishwanathan Anand will play an exhibition match against the current Spanish women's chess champion in the town of Vera (Almeria) in Spain. According to a fax message from Anand's sponsors TNQ sponsorship India (Pvt) Ltd, the match will be held along with the third edition of the Princie de Pontremoli chess tournament there.

Later, the 28-year-old Grandmaster will alsoplay a simultaneous exhibition match against 30 young chess fans from Almeria. The matches have been organised to attract attention to Vera's candidature to host the Mediterranean Games in 2005. Anand will also address the opening ceremony of the Spanish Women's Chess Championship.

Srikkanth's serial from July 12

HYDERABAD: Former Indian skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth would feature in a cricket based television serial Golden Moments of Indian Cricket to be aired from July 12 by a private Telugu channel E-TV.

The 52-episode serial, jointly produced by Srikkanth Sports and Entertainment and E-TV, would cover the golden era of Indian cricket starting from the semi-finals of 1983 Prudential World Cup, Srikkanth told reporters today.
