On the sidewalk

Chatura Poojari
Having moved to Mumbai 15 years ago, actor Gulshan Grover feels that he has finally come to terms with the "bad, bad city". "It was a tough place to begin your career. Especially since I did not have a Jackie Shroff-personality, where I would walk in to a room and the producers would welcome me," he says. His liaison with the city began in a small one-room apartment in Krishna building, Juhu. "Major happenings of my career happened there. All my small and mega breaks -- my marriage, my son, everything. And I used to go back and tell people in Delhi, `I live just a stone's throw away from Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra'," he laughs.

Gulshan spent 10 years in his tiny room before he moved to a plush apartment in Versova. But he still finds himself returning to the lane across Krishna Apartment, close to the famous Hare Rama Hare Krishna temple in Juhu.

Gulshan remembers dividing his time between the pan beedi shop, the baniya ka dukaan and at the temple across the road. He is especially fond ofthedukaan -- now changed to a swanky Sha Dhanji Kuverji Stores -- and thebaniya who would occasionally let him receive calls in his shop. But the place that Gulshan literally worships is the Shri Mukteshwar Devalaya. "I would go across and sit in the temple whenever I was depressed or feeling down," he says. Now, he doesn't wait for the blues. Come rain or floods, Gulshan makes it to the temple, regularly.
