SURAT, July 9: Even after the arrest of Hanif Meman, whose inter-community marriage with Varsha Shah sparked off communal skirmishes in Bardoli town late last month, the saffron brigade is determined to go ahead with its call for boycott of the minority community.Peace has returned to the town that saw cases of arson and rioting after a march taken out by Hindu organisations to protest against inter-community marriages on June 25. Curfew was imposed in the town by 4.45 p.m. that day. At present, only a four-hour night curfew is imposed.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal had given a call for boycott of the minority community to economically and socially weaken the section to protest against what they called its ``conspiracy to lure Hindu girls into marriage''.
General secretary of Bardoli Unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Harshad Shah told Express Newsline on Thursday that the boycott was on.
Awareness among Hindus was slowly increasing, he claimed, adding the Vishwa Hindu Parishad would also go ahead with its decision to distribute `Om' stickers to be pasted on autorickshaws driven by Hindu drivers to distinguish them from the ones driven by minority community members.Hindus would be asked to patronise three-wheelers carrying the ancient Hindu symbol, he added.
Meanwhile, Meman was remanded to judicial custody on Thursday when his three-day police police remand ended.
He is facing charges of raping and marrying a minor. He was brought to the Surat sub-jail.
A Bardoli police station officer said Meman would be booked under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act once his he was released on bail.
However, the final decision would be taken by the district collector,he added.
