BPL all-India Open from July 19

BANGALORE, July 10: The third leg of the BAI's Indian Grand Prix, the fourth BPL All Indian Open Badminton Tournament, will be held here from July 19 to 22. About 100 players are expected to take part in the tournament which will see competitions in men's singles, doubles, women's singles and doubles.

Executive President of BAI Prakash Padukone told media persons here on Friday that the tournament carries a cash prize of Rs four lakh. The Grand Prix will have six legs. The venues for the remaining three legs of the tournaments will be Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The first two legs of the Grand Prix were held at Mumbai and Hyderabad.

The Grand Prix will be followed by the Masters at Mumbai in the last week of December for which entries will be restricted to the top 16 performers in these tournaments. Details regarding the timing of the tourney will be revealed after the BAI's Executive Meeting, scheduled to be held here on July 22, on the day of the finals of the championships, Padukone added.

Datuk Punch Gunalan, vice-president of the International Badminton Federation and Secretary General, Asian Badminton Confederation, who played a key role in bringing about a rapprochement between the two warring groups of the BAI, is a special invitee for the tournament.

Gopi Chand who is recovering from a setback following an injury during the Hyderabad leg of the tournament will stage a combeback in the Bangalore tournament. The top players who will be seen in action among others are Abhin Shyam Gupta, Aparna Popat, Manjusha Kanwar.

The training camp for the Indian team which will participate in the Commonwealth Games will be held here from August 1 to 30 but quite a few of the Indian players will miss the camp for a few days as they will be taking part in the Singapore Open between August 10 to 16, Padukone said.

A 35-member Indian contingent will take part in the Asian Satellite International Prize Money tournament due to be begin at Chennai from July 13.
