TN Government moves HC to lift stay on Jaya's cases

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, July 12: The Tamil Nadu government has filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking to vacate the interim order restraining the three special courts set up to investigate the corruption cases against former CM J Jayalalitha.

The state government alleged that the accused were delaying the proceedings by protracted arguments and maintained that the interim stay order will only further the delay.

The special courts have been constituted to try the corruption cases against former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, her cabinet colleagues, IAS officers and others. Three special judges were appointed by a government order dated April 30, 1997, and 46 cases were posted before them.

Seeking to quash the order, Jayalalitha and others moved the Madras HC and Justice Jayasimhababu granted an interim stay on June 17, 1997.
