EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, July 12: The Punjab police on Saturday claimed to have unearthed plans of terrorists to spread large scale violence in the state and Delhi, following the arrest of three Babbar Khalsa activists from Batala district.

Huge quantity of arms and explosives were also recovered from the militants.Addressing a news conference here, DIG P C Dogra said that those arrested included Amarjit Singh Sohal, a surrendered hard-core terrorist, his associate Darshan Singh and one Jaswant Singh. The three were working under Babbar Khalsa chief Wadhawa Singh, who himself is under the supervision of Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan.

The arms recovered include 25 kg of RDX, 7.5 kg of PETN, one kg of Kalium Cyanide, one AK-47 assault rifle, two mousers, four ABCD timers, 12 detonators, one Maruti car and Rs 37,000 in cash. The DGP disclosed that the Babbar Khalsa outfit was concentrating on creating trouble in Delhi.

The group arrested from Batala was supplied weapons with specific directives ``to carry outacts of terrorism against persons in key positions as well as in public places, with the intention of generating communal tension in the national Capital'', he said. The captured consignment of arms and explosives was transported from Samba sector in Jammu area in a truck by one Sohal and one Darshan Singh.

According to Inspector General of Police (border range) J P Birdi, the Babbar Khalsa activists were trying to contact surrendered militants and motivate them to rejoin. The effort was to strengthen the militants' base in Majha area.

Sohal, the kingpin in this conspiracy, had been the top hit-man of the Babbars in Majha before his surrender in 1993. Darshan Singh had also been active earlier and both of them were involved in over two dozen cases, according to Birdi.

Dogra further revealed that Sohal revived his links with his mentors in Pakistan and other countries and launched a militant recruitment drive. He managed to motivate Jaswant Singh and Hardev Singh to undertake terrorist activities.
