Vajpayee underplays differences
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee here today sought to underplay the differences between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and said the minor differences that had cropped up between the two were being sorted out through mutual consultations, a report from Mandi Gobindgarh says.

Meira hints at shift in stand
The Congress high command today indicated a shift in its policy on the issue of inclusion of Udham Singh Nagar in proposed Uttaranchal with party general secretary Meira Kumar stating that the majority of the population in the district was against its transfer to the hill state and this fact has to be given due weightage, a report from Chandigarh says.

Heavy shelling by Pak troops
In the first of its kind of heavy firing in the Jammu region, Pakistani troops shelled 16 Indian positions and civilian areas along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC) "intermittently" since yesterday, official sources said here today. Pakistani Rangers resorted to unprovoked and heavy firing on 12 Border Outposts (BoPs) along IB in R S Pura, Samba and Chicken Neck sub-sectors of the Jammu frontier late last night, a Border Security Force (BSF) spokesman told PTI, a report from Jammu says.

Women's Bill may see trouble
With various opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party, sharpening their knives, the Womenís Reservation Bill is likely to run into trouble soon after it is introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow, a report from New Delhi says.
