Straightening the leaning tower of Pisa by a mere 40 cms
Italy is taking steps to straighten its famous leaning tower of Pisa but only by 40 cms, compared to the four and-a-half metres the building is off kilter. The $23 million government plan includes the laying of foundations from which thick steel cables will run up to the tower, which they will surround 22 metres above the ground. The project should conclude next year, before the start of celebrations marking the year of Christian grand jubilee -- the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus.

Making of the Mahatma
The theatre fraternity, in Mumbai, it seems has developed an obsession with the Mahatma. Of late, Gandhi has ceased to be just a historical figure to them. They have even taken him off his pedestal and abandoned the halo around his neck. And the biggest irony is that in the 50th year of Indian Independence, plays like Chandrakant Kulkarni's Gandhi Viruddh Gandhi, Chetan Datar's Gandhi Ambedkar and Vinay Apte's Mi Nathuram Godse Boltoy have been staged. And to full houses.

A flirtatious farce
It may be a lazy Sunday afternoon, but the cast of Hosi Vasunia's The French Cuckoo is full of energy. Sitting around a round table, in the rehearsal room at the NCPA, all the actors are discussing their various day-time jobs.
