Police may appeal against Gawli's acquittal
MUMBAI, July 16: The Mumbai police is examining a proposal to file a criminal revision application in the High Court against the sessions court order acquitting underworld don Arun Gawli from Nathubhai Desai murder case.Additional sessions judge S R jaiswal acquitted Gawli on Wednesday as the main witness turned hostile and also because the prosecution could not establish evidence against the don.
Gawli, now detained under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, faced the charge of murder and conspiracy along with Ganesh Bhonsale, Sada Pawle (both dead) and two other wanted accused, Namya Hari Patil and Sharad Damodar Banbe. Desai, a city builder, was murdered in front of office of Shanti Star Builders in south Mumbai on August 29 last year.
SSC students felicitated
Twenty six students who scored over 75 per cent in the SSC examinations were felicitated at a function held on July 15. Organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)workers from the Umarkhadi area, the function was held at the Sadguru gym hall. Education minister Dattaji Rane was the chief guest.
Mobile health care for kids
A mobile health care project for the street children of greater Mumbai was inaugurated by State Minister for Urban Development Ravindra Mane today. The project is a joint effort of AAMRAE, UNICEF and T N medical college and Nair hospital, Mumbai.
Sanskrit scholar passes away
Sanskrit scholar Acharya Bhaishankar Purohit passed away on July 14, 1998. He was 76. He had been working in the Sanskrit department of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for the past 50 years. He also served as Principal of Bhavan's Sanskrit Patshala from 1968 to 1984.
