MUMBAI, July 16: In a recent meeting of the Management Council (MC), University of Mumbai, it was decided to reinstate Marathi professor Arun Kamble, who was suspended for over a year on charges of molesting an MA girl student in Kalina campus in March, 1997.However, the university has stopped three increments of Professor Kamble. A university official added that the decision to reinstate the professor was not unanimous, since one management council member had put in a note of dissent on the matter.
The varsity had suspended the professor last year and set up an enquiry committee after the student filed an FIR at the Vakola police station and complained to the vice-chancellor. The alleged victim had stated that she was called inside Professor Kamble's staff quarters in the campus on the pretext of providing academic notes, but was molested.
Retired judge Justice S N Daud who had headed the university committee to probe into the matter, had recommended Kamble's suspension. However, the MC members feltotherwise, stating that three of his increments were already stalled.
Following a spate of sexual harassment cases in colleges and institutes in the state last year, the state higher education department had issued a circular that banned female students from going to the residences of male lecturers and professors.
