MUMBAI, July 16: Riyad Palia of Otters Club and Bhavana Sharma (BPCL) looked on a record breaking mood on the opening day of the Greater Mumbai Amamteur Aquatics Association (GMAA) Age-Group and Open Aquatic Championships, sponsored by Suman Motels, at the Andheri Sports Complex today.
A total of nine records went for a toss on the inaugural day of the four-day championships.
Leading the pack of record breakers were Palia and Bhavna who accounted for two records each.
Palia swam splendidly to erase Shane Pedder's five-year-old record in the 200 metres back-stroke for boys Group II by nearly seven seconds with an incredibly fast time of 2 minutes 30.30 seconds. Another 12-year-old 100 m butterfly stroke was sent for a toss by Palia with a time of 1 minute 9.30 seconds. The record was held by former National champion Gaurav Kapoor.Bhavana had her share of glory with two records to her credit.

The other records broken today were; Nanita Khurana (200m backstroke), Sindoor Thakkar (100m freestyle), Avinash Kripalani (50m Butterfly), Parikshit Shetty (100m Breaststroke) and Gayatri Dhumatkar (50m Butterfly).
