Whacky punishment for college teachers

AURANGABAD, July 16: `College teachers' were slapped and garlanded with slippers and leaves of the `besharam' tree at Paithan gate today, as the the agitation against coaching classes gained ground following the June 24 Bombay High Court order on private tutorials.Pedestrians stopped in their tracks as members of the All India Students Federation raised effigies of `corrupt' college lecturers and whacked them with slippers. Hundreds of people mobbed the AISF members and pushed and shoved each other to append their signatures to a statement supporting the week long-agitation launched by the AISF against private coaching classes run by college teachers here. Among the signatories were about 400 parents of college students. Earlier, the students toured the city with the effigies while ringing bells to draw the people's attention to the issue. Earlier this week, the AISF conducted a demonstration in front of Chate's coaching classes while on Guru Poornima, they hung garlands of slippers and leavesaround the necks of lecturers at their class premises AISF has temporarily suspended its agitation even as the deputy director of education (Aurangabad) has left for Mumbai to discuss the issue.
