Varsity relents, not to cancel admission of foreigners
The All Foreign Students Association (AFSA) has called upon students whose admissions were cancelled by the University of Pune for the non-fulfillment of eligibility conditions to report to the International Students Centre before July 25, as the final chance to clear all the formalities.

The university had in a stern decision cancelled admissions of over 600 students from various countries for lack of submission of medical certificates and non-fulfillment of eligibility conditions including the submission of student visa endorsed in the name of the University of Pune.

AFSA president Khalid Aseel Ahmed said that after various talks with the Vice-Chancellor Dr A S Nigavekar, the university has decided not to cancel the admissions and reconsider the cases. However, the university will impose fines depending on how serious the case is.

While AFSA admits that students had committed several mistakes, Khalid however pointed out that there was a need to introduce a new mechanism to deal with foreign students, due to the lack of communication gap between the officials and students.

AFSA has also urged the university to reconsider its decision to hike the fees for Ph D students. The fee for the Ph D course has been hiked from Rs 5000 to a whopping Rs 25,000, Khalid charges. ``At least the university could have introduced the fee-hike in phases,'' he laments. AFSA has also called upon students to attend the next meeting scheduled in the first week of August at the university.
