PU counters open today
The Punjab University inquiry and reception counter and the cash counter for sale of forms will remain open on Saturday and Sunday. The office of the Dean of College Development Council, dealing with the receipt of admission forms for the regional centre at Muktsar, will also remain open. Apart from this, some employees dealing with BA/B.Sc third-year and BA second-year will also be working.

Customs, I-T staff to go on strike
Over 1.5 lakh employees of Customs, Income Tax and Central Excise have decided to go on an indefinite strike from July 21 to protest against the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission, according to a statement issued here.

`Educate public about new road rules'
The Chandigarh Parents Association has asked the Inspector General of Police R. P. Singh to educate the public at least for three days before implementing the judgment of Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding drivers and pillion riders. It was stated in the Associations's press release issued here today.

Seminar on development of SCs
The North India Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Association will organise a seminar on the development of scheduled castes over the past 50 years on Sunday. Justice V.R. Krishana Iyer, former judge of Supreme Court, and Haanuman Thapa, chairman of National Commission for SC/ST, will be among the main speakers, according to association's president K.C. Shenmar. The welfare ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha will also participate in the seminar, he added. The seminar will be inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Anjuman central committee dissolved
All the office bearers of Anjuman Aqwaam-ul-Muslameen Alhind are informed that the central committee of the Anjuman stands dissolved from Friday. The nomination of new office bearers will be done by July 31, said a press release issued here today.

Two-day conference concludes at TTTI
The two-day conference on re-engineering polytechnic education concluded at the Technical Teachers' Training Institute, here today. Chairing the session, M M Malhotra, former principal, TTTI, said favourable organisational culture, value system and leadership styles of heads of institutions would help in re-engineering polytechnic education. Prof V Narayana Rao, principal, TTTI, Chennai chaired the valedictory session. Principal, TTTI, Chandigarh, Dr S.K. Bhattacharya also spoke on the occasion.

Workshop for number painters
The Traffic Warden Cell in collaboration with the city traffic police will organise a workshop for number plate painters on Sunday morning at the Traffic Park in Sector 23. Chief Traffic Warden Amar Manchanda has stated that the workhshop will educate painters on painting vehicle number plates according to specifications laid down in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989.

`Release UGC grades'
The executive body of the Chandigarh Government College Lecturers' Welfare Association today endorsed the call given by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation to press for the early release of new UGC grades. General secretary of the association, Dr Daljit Singh appealed to all government college lecturers to participate in the dharna to held at New Delhi on July 21.

Better arrears sought
The Punjab University Staff (non-teaching) Association has appealed to the university syndicate to release the payment of arrears as per the recommendations of the Punjab Government. This was stated in a release issued by senior vice- president of the association, Tilak Raj Wadhwa.
